Physiotherapy for Hip Pain
Pain on walking, running or after sitting is distressing and frustrating. Some hip conditions follow an injury, some develop over time, and pain can also refer from your spine. We are very experienced in identifying the cause and supporting you with the right plan. Caroline Garrett is our lower limb specialist rehab physiotherapist.
What does a consultation involve?
- A detailed history of your problem, activities and general health
- A physical assessment, for which you may need to remove some outer clothing (a chaperone is available on request)
- A tailored management plan for your condition
- Referral for further investigations or specialist assessment if needed, liaising with your GP where required
Hip osteoarthritis
Degenerative change with associated inflammation, causing stiffness and difficulty walking. It cannot be cured but does not always worsen; physiotherapy improves joint mobility and strengthens the muscles that support it. A daily walk or a swim helps too.
Groin strain
Inner thigh pain from an overstretch or a kicking action affecting the hip adductor tendons. Rest from sport for at least a couple of weeks, then let us assess the cause and rebuild towards play.
Hip bursitis
A burning pain on the outside of the hip, aggravated by walking or lying on that side. Weak hip muscles are a common contributor, so we assess your whole lower limb and build a specific strengthening programme. Avoid sleeping on the affected side while it settles.
